Our knowledge of our Donovan ancestors is limited, an ever-growing number of generations in the past, but there's a lot to be proud of. Our corner of the family had a bittersweet weekend, but one that I think brought us closer together, even if we're no longer united under the same coat of arms:
I couldn't easily find an image of the crest with the family motto: Adjuvante deo in hostes, or, "God aiding against enemies." Kind of badass for a clan of Irish raiders!
While looking up the translation (this was a while ago), I came across a similar phrase that particularly struck me: Deo adjuvante non timendum, "With the help of God there is nothing to fear." These words rang true to both my parochial upbringing and my current, more detached relationship with the Church.
I love how open to interpretation the idea is. Some might believe that there's nothing to fear because their god will provide for them. However, I personally wouldn't find promises of physical protection or rich rewards convincing. But I don't think the more worldly interpretation is any less faithful. There are plenty of Biblical stories, psalms and other words of wisdom that make clear that life as a Christian will not be easy. In the words of the hymn, "Be Not Afraid." The true rewards are eternal, so in this life, all that faith can guarantee protection from, or freedom from, is fear. While I'm not even close to the most religious person out there, I do find some small measure of strength in the thought, and comfort at times like this.
Requiem in pace, Grandpa Tom, Dunny, Boppa!
