Philosopher-Athlete... Champion

What a great end to the NBA season.  I haven't been too enamored with the Dallas Mavericks in a few years.  But after the untimely demise of the Knicks' postseason, it was a pretty easy bandwagon to get on once they met the Heat.  And Dirk, Jet, and Marion and Co. really came through.

I don't have much to add on Nowitzki, whether he actually transformed to a championship-caliber player or not.  But one of his comments from his post-championship (and MVP) press conference struck me: "If I would have won [a championship] earlier in my career, maybe I never would have put all the work and the time in that I have over the last 13 years."

In one sense, that seems backwards.  If the goal of sport is to win a championship, then the sooner the better, right?  But I get Dirk's comment.  Sports are a challenge, one with mental, physical, and skillful dimensions against which to you to try to perfect yourself.  My approach to sports is not to hit some benchmark based on an arbitrary level of competition.  Regardless of defense, really, I feel that I control how I perform and should always be improving, whether it takes just a few tries or weeks or years of effort.  Winning - a game or a championship - is just extra validation or reward.

In any case, congrats, Dirk.  You deserve it.

And finally, since it was so prominent in the Google auto-fill, here's a gratuitous picture from the "Dirk Nowitzki girlfriend" image search:
